Sri Lanka 61-3 at lunch against Pakistan

Sarfraz Ahmed and Pakistan are on a high after big wins in limited overs cricket

Dimuth Karunarathne stole the thunder from Yasir Shah as he fell short of a deserving century on Day 1 of the first Test in Abu Dhabi.

Sri Lanka's decision to bat first had appeared to backfire after reaching 3-61 at lunch.

Captain of Pakistan, Sarfraz Ahmed celebrates with his teammates.

The Test match is Pakistan´s first since the retirement in May of Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq.

Karunaratne and Chandimal battled through a testing afternoon session without losing a wicket as Sri Lanka fought back.

He was seven runs from a seventh test century, and third this year.

Yasir then dominated in the first session with successive wickets of Kusal Mendis and Thirimanne.

The wicket of Thirimanne was Yasir's 150th in Test cricket making him the fastest spin bowler to reach the milestone in terms of matches played narrowly pipping Clarrie Grimmett who took 28 matches to reach the mark against the Pakistan tweakers 27.

Dinesh Chandimal (60) and Niroshan Dickwella (42) were not out at stumps, playing out almost 21 overs together.

Sri Lanka meanwhile have had plenty of Test cricket this summer although the results will not be something they want to dwell on.

Pakistan will use experienced batsman Azhar Ali on number three after he opened the innings in the last 12 months and will promote Asad Shafiq from six to four.

Responding to a question about Sri Lanka's tour to Pakistan, he said that team players were not discussing it.

Chandimal accepted that the previous series of Sri Lanka was not good as it should be, but he expected that his team will regain its lost form.
