UKIP unveil new leader as ex squaddie Henry Bolton

The new leader said 'Brexit is our core task however it is not the end of the line'

The new UKIP leader is a former British Army officer, Thames Valley police officer and UN Governor.

Speaking at the UKIP conference in Torquay, Mr Bolton urged party members to "rally around the party", saying: "Without being united, we can not lead".

His election was immediately welcomed by Nigel Farage, Ukip's former leader, who had reportedly planned to start a new party if Waters won.

Based in Folkestone, the former soldier and police officer was considered to be a front-runner in the contest and had seen the odds on him winning fall dramatically in recent weeks.

UKIP has already lost a significant number of voters, dropping from 4 million in the 2015 general election to fewer than 600,000 in June this year. Now, it's got a new leader to figure out the party's future.

Although he did not name her, his comments appeared to be aimed at defeated leadership hopeful Anne Marie Waters, the controversial Sharia Watch founder who has denounced Islam as "evil".

He has said he will have conversations with Ms Waters, Mr Farage and Mr Banks about their futures with the party.

A banner was superimposed with an image of Mr Farage posing as Adolf Hitler with the European Union logo in the background.

Asked to what extent he will focus on Islam, Bolton said: "Islam is of concern".

"Brexit is our core task", Mr Bolton affirmed in a pedestrian acceptance speech. BBC political correspondent Ben Wright said Mr Bolton would be seen as the continuity candidate. He added: "I think the party has today voted for a leader who has been very open about what he feels is the way forward, and that's myself of course".

UKIP was in search for its fourth leader in 12 months after Nuttall quit following the party's poor general election performance.

The party has been riven by splits and disagreements, one of which resulted in MEP Steven Woolfe being taken to hospital after a fight with another Ukip MEP.

He said: "Without being united, we can not lead". She resigned after just 18 days in the post, saying she could not work with the party hierarchy.
