Shocking footage shows barrier breaking as fans injured during French soccer match

Horrific footage from the scene shows hundreds of fans piling ontop of one another as the barrier gave way

"Imagine 500 Lille fans wanting to run get onto the pitch... all pushing a barrier down that was in flawless condition".

Several football supporters have been injured after a barrier collapsed during a match between Amiens and Lille in a Ligue 1 encounter in France.

Lille now sit third from bottom in Ligue 1 and have not won since the opening weekend of the season, where they defeated Claudio Ranieri's Nantes.

Five fans were seriously injured when a barrier collapsed at the front of a stand during a French top-flight match.

As the stadium was evacuated, match delegate, Noel Mannino, said the game would be abandoned.

Lille had opened the scoring in the 15th minute and fans behind the goal had surged forward to celebrate when the fence collapsed under the pressure, spilling fans onto the field at the Amiens ground.

Meanwhile, Amiens president Bernard Joanni said he called Lille CEO Marc Ingla to apologize after he appeared to blame the visiting supporters for the incident. "We hope this is not too serious".

"We are giving them all our support".

Lille's official Twitter account posted a more positive update on Sunday, saying: "Six people are still hospitalised this Sunday morning, but the news is reassuring".

In a statement, Amiens said: "The club and all of its leaders wants to express solidarity with the injured Lille fans and their families, with their health paramount".
