Myanmar offers to 'take back' Rohingyas from Bangladesh

Amidst Rohingya crisis, India opens 2 checkpoints at Myanmar, Bangladesh borders

A Sri Lankan court remanded a Buddhist monk in custody on Monday after charging him with leading hardline nationalists in a protest against 31 Rohingya Muslim asylum seekers last week, forcing the refugees to flee a United Nations safe house, police said.

Kyaw Tint Swe, a Minister in the office of Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, made the proposal during talks with Bangladesh Foreign Minister A.H. Mahmood Ali here, Daily Star reported.

She said Myanmar was ready to start a verification process under a 1993 agreement with Bangladesh and "refugees from this country will be accepted without any problem".

India has asked Myanmar security forces to take steps to prevent further Rohingya exodus and encourage their safe and sustainable return from Bangladesh reiterating its concern over the issue at the just concluded UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. Hasina accused Myanmar authorities of laying landmines on the border to prevent the Rohingya from returning and said the United Nations must take immediate measures to find a solution to the crisis. After fleeing burning villages they say were set alight by soldiers and Buddhist mobs, more than 100 Rohingya have drowned in the scramble to cross the Naf river that divides the two countries.

Most Rohingya have been denied citizenship in Myanmar, although many families have lived in the country for generations. The joint working group has to be formed first.

There was no immediate comment from Suu Kyi's representative. Three groups of diplomats were taken to various places in the conflict-torn state.

Bangladesh has proposed a bilateral deal to complete the repatriation process. He did not provide details on the diplomats' nationalities.

Myanmar's insistence on verifying the Rohingya could prove a "stumbling block" to repatriation, according to Shahab Enam Khan, an worldwide relations specialist at Jahangirnagar University.

The World Food Program (WFP) appealed on Sunday for 75 million dollars in emergency aid over the next six months to help alleviate the suffering of Rohingya Muslims fleeing violence in Myanmar.

Local officials in Rakhine said Monday's tour includes meetings with relatives of victims allegedly killed by militants during violence against Hindu, Mro and Daignets minority communities in Maungdaw township.
