Russian political Facebook ads were seen by up to 10m Americans

Facebook

Facebook says ads that ran on the company's social media platform and have been linked to a Russian internet agency were seen by an estimated 10 million people before and after the 2016 election. Some of the Russian ads appeared highly sophisticated in their targeting of key demographic groups in areas of the states that turned out to be pivotal, two of the sources said. Trump also won Wisconsin by less than 1% of the vote, the first time that state backed a Republican nominee since 1984.

Wisconsin and MI were among the handful of battleground states that helped Trump win the presidency over Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

Facebook said the ads addressed social and political issues and ran in the United States between 2015 and 2017.

On Monday, Facebook announced that it shared the information with the investigators of about 3,000 advertisements, allegedly bought by Russians to be used for the political and economic propaganda.

Google is now looking vaults for evidence of Russian meddling in the 2016 election on its own network, after Virginia Sen.

44% of total ad impressions (number of times ads were displayed) were before the U.S. election on November 8, 2016; 56% were after the election.

It's unknown exactly how much Facebook will invest in machine learning, or how it plans to identify ads with "subtle expressions of violence".

While many recent criticisms of Facebook are indeed warranted, no one can accuse the company of not taking security seriously.

Remember when Facebook was so quick to dismiss the reports saying fake news spreading on the social network may have played a crucial role in last year's presidential election?

50 percent of them got $3, 99 percent got $1,000 in ad spend.

Company officials will meet with the House and Senate intelligence committees and the Senate Judiciary Committee to hand over the ads, a Facebook official said.

"Reviewing ads means assessing not just the content of an ad, but the context in which it was bought and the intended audience - so we're changing our ads review system to pay more attention to these signals", the company said.

Facebook claimed in a statement that its record, of what the firm last week dubbed as Russian-associated pages, comprised shutting down various marketed events. "While we may not always agree with the positions of those who would speak on issues here, we believe in their right to do so-just as we believe in the right of Americans to express opinions on issues in other countries", Facebook said in its post.
