Senate Intel Committee on Russia: "Issue of collusion is still open"

U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee leaders will update the public Wednesday on the committee's investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election and whether Donald Trump's campaign colluded with the Kremlin to help propel Trump to victory.

He says "the issue of collusion is still open".

In the end, Burr said, "The committee can not really decide the credibility of the dossier without understanding things like, who paid for it?"

Three sources with knowledge of Mueller's probe said his investigators have assumed control of multiple inquiries into allegations by USA intelligence agencies that Russian Federation interfered in the election to benefit Trump, a Republican.

The news conference Wednesday was an effort by the committee to lay out some of what's been found so far as the 2018 midterm elections approach. "I'm giving you the feedback we got from the individuals who were in the room making the decisions".

The Senate intelligence committee is one of three congressional panels that are investigating Russian election meddling and possible collusion, in addition to Mueller's investigation.

According to a dossier authored by a former British intelligence official, Christopher Steele, Trump campaign officials worked hand-in-glove with Kremlin operatives.

Burr, who spoke alongside the committee's ranking Democrat, Sen.

Committee vice-chairman Mark Warner (D-VA) offered similar remarks by stating that Russian activity in the American political system might have continued well beyond Election Day.

The Republican said the panel can not determine the dossier's credibility without understanding who paid for it and who contributed to the material. "Who were your sources?" Trump, however, goes back and forth about how he describes the matter; he has both accepted that it happened and called it, most recently, a "hoax."

Russia Today, the Kremlin-backed television network, spent $274,000 on more than 1,800 tweets on Twitter's network that "definitely or potentially targeted the USA market" during the 2016 presidential campaign, Twitter officials have also said. "And we're not in a position to come to any type of finding".

So far, the committee has held 11 open hearings, conducted over 100 interviews spanning more than 250 hours, delved into 4,000 pages of transcripts and analyzed almost 100,000 pages of documents, including highly classified intelligence and cyber security briefings as well as campaign-related files. The first is for Trump's personal attorney, Michael Cohen, who had been scheduled for a private staff interview last month, but the committee postponed the appearance and invited him to a public session instead after Cohen provided a statement to the media denying any collusion with Russian officials.

The Senate panel has also been focused on Russian efforts to push out social media messages on Twitter and Facebook, and is examining more than 3,000 Russia-linked ads that Facebook turned over to Congress this week. CNN reported this week that Russian-bought ads on Facebook specifically targeted key voters in the battleground states of MI and Wisconsin, both of which Trump won by narrow margins.
