Children And Teacher Burned Alive In Nursery School In Brazil

Harrowing footage from outside the nursery shows desperate parents in tears as emergency crews work at the scene.

At least 25 people, mostly children aged four and five, are being treated for burns. BBC reports that some of those who were injured may need to be airlifted to specialized trauma centers in the state capital of Belo Horizonte.

About 80 children were in the nursery school when the attack occurred, prompting anxious parents to converge on the site which they found reduced to ashes.

"I was thinking of changing nursery schools because we are preparing to move. When I saw him again he was already dead in hospital".

The attack - which was perpetrated by Damião Soares dos Santos, 50, who also died - was premeditated, according to police who found gallons of fuel in his home. He died in hospital of his wounds.

Brazilian President Michel Temer expressed his sympathies via Twitter. This must be a very, very sad loss, "he said".

Mayor of Janauba, Carlos Isaildon Mendes, confirmed that the teacher, named as Helley Abreu Batista, died from her injuries after being taken to hospital.
