A number of people were injured Saturday when a vehicle mounted the pavement outside the Natural History Museum in London and struck pedestrians, according to Scotland Yard.

The police is investigating the incident, though not considering any terror link.

Oliver Cheshire, a model and the fiance of popstar Pixie Lott, was one of those who helped hold the man down after getting out of his Jaguar.

Police in London said a man had been detained after a collision in South Kensington on October 7.

"We sent multiple resources to the scene, including our hazardous area response team, ambulance crews, paramedics in fast response cars and incident response officers", Peter McKenna, deputy director of operations, said in a statement.

Doctors are treating mostly leg and head injuries, but no-one's believed to be in a life-threatening condition.

Britain's current security alert level is at "severe", the second highest level, meaning an attack is thought highly likely.

Meanwhile, government sources said Prime Minister Theresa May receives regular updates regarding the incident.

Nearby museums have been evacuated and the roads around the area have been closed, according to reports.

In a statement, London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he was in contact with Assistant Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley.

A spokesman for the museum said the collision with pedestrians was outside its entrance on Exhibition Road, while a witness said there were armed police on the scene.

In late June, a van hit pedestrians near a north London mosque, killing one man and injuring 11 people.

A vehicle mounted the pavement and collided with pedestrians in South Kensington.

Dieon Rurora said people were running down the street to get away and some fell. He says "It was quite scary". The Natural History Museum had taken up cooperation with police, shared it.

Police officers stand guard after the incident.

Mr Rowley is the head of United Kingdom counter-terrorism policing.

The Natural History Museum is one of London's most popular attractions, with 4.6 million visitors a year.
