Brendan Steele wins back-to-back Safeway Opens

Safeway Open caddie J.J. Jakovac

Phil Mickelson (final-round 70) and Chesson Hadley (final-round 73) tied for third place at 276.

Making his second career PGA Tour start, Duncan leads by a stroke from defending champion Brendan Steele. Steele went on to birdie the 16th and 18th holes, with the latter sewing up his third PGA Tour victory. But a birdie at 16 moved him to 14 under and a two-shot lead.

"I didn't hit it the best".

Steele won the tournament by two strokes, with Tony Finau finishing at 13-under par.

The American had a favourable bounce on the approach to the par-five fifth and holed the subsequent putt to eagle the hole in a round which included six birdies, and is now clear 7/1 favourite with Sky Bet.

"I was happy the way I hung in there; I didn't hit a lot of quality shots off the tee coming in like I needed to", Finau said. This will definitely set up my season and hopefully springboard me into another really good year.

"I had a good time today", Mickelson said. After all that, it was no surprise when the tour said Wednesday that Thomas had been voted the PGA Tour player of the year.

Fresh off a dominant Presidents Cup victory, Phil Mickelson got the 2017-18 PGA Tour season kicked off with a t-3 with Chesson Hadley at 12 under. "So it was nice to get going right away here in Napa and keep the momentum going", he said. After Tyrrell Hatton completed a second straight win in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, Brendan Steele successfully defended the Safeway Open.

The last PGA Tour title won by Mickelson was back in 2013, the same year he won both the US Open and The Open Championship. He had an eagle, 10 birdies and a bogey.

Hadley lost his PGA Tour card at the end of the 2016 season and dropped back to the Web.com Tour. Emiliano Grillo (68) of Argentina, the victor in 2015, was tied for fifth place with Canada's Graham DeLaet (69) at 11 under par.

Leader, Duncan, is playing his first PGA Tour event as a cardholder and after a strong opening round and an impressive start to round two he appeared to be losing his way early in the back nine with three consecutive bogeys. Daly had missed the cuts in his past 12 PGA Tour events.
