Former 49ers QB YA Tittle passes away at age 90

Former New York Giants quarterback Y.A. Tittle has died at age 90, his alma mater, Louisiana State University, confirmed on Monday. In a 1962 amusement against the Redskins, Tittle tossed for 505 yards and seven touchdowns, which were incredible numbers in a period known for wounding running backs.

Y.A. Tittle Avenue off of Bob Petit Boulevard, near LSU's campus, was also named in his honor.

When Tittle left LSU as the No. 6 overall pick of the Baltimore Colts in the 1948 NFL Draft, he did so as the school's all-time leader in completions (162), passing yards (2,525) and passing touchdowns (23).

Tittle led the New York Giants to three straight Eastern Division titles from 1961 through 1963. Tittle's passing total still stands as the 15th highest single-game total in National Football League history while his seven touchdowns are still tied as the top single-game performance by any quarterback in National Football League history.

Tittle never won a championship but was shown in an iconic photo taken by Dozier Mobley during his final season in 1964. It came right after Tittle had thrown an interception and he was hit hard on the play. Tittle has been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. The feature of his vocation in Baton Rouge was a 1946 season where he drove the Tigers to a 9-1-1 record and a Cotton Bowl appearance.
