2 prison employees killed, several injured after NC prison attempted escape

Employees injured in attempted prison break in Pasquotank Co

According to CBS News reports, a fire was set in the sewing plant of the Pasquotank Correctional facility located in #Elizabeth City, early on Thursday afternoon, the state Department of Public Safety (DPS), said while confirming the incident.

"The fire and attempted escape happened in the sewing plant", said Keith Acree, a spokesman with the public safety department.

35-year-old Correctional Officer Justin Smith and 50-year-old Correction Enterprises Manager Veronica Darden were the two officers killed.

According to NCDPS, the prison is under control and under lockdown with all inmates accounted for.

NCDPS said the prison houses 725 male inmates in close, medium, and minimum custody.

"It was chaos here", the Virginian-Pilot cited Randy Cartwright, Pasquotank County Sheriff, saying. The prison is now under control and locked down, with all inmates accounted for in multiple counts. "They sew uniforms for state prison inmates ... mostly institutional uniforms".

The public school district locked doors at three nearby schools after getting word about 3:30 p.m. of the escape attempt. Four inmates were treated for injuries, the department said. Fires set in prison sewing plant.

Peter Sengenberger with Sentara Healthcare said that six people were taken to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center.

All afternoon activities at the schools have been cancelled.

Students who are bus riders who have not arrived home as of yet, will be returned to the school until we hear further from Emergency Management.
