Microsoft Edge browser preview makes its way to Android

At the basic level, some limited technical data about the device usage is processed, while with full telemetry enabled, Microsoft also processes app usage as well as web surfing through Edge.

The Dutch DPA investigated Windows 10 Home and Pro and found that Microsoft still doesn't properly inform users about the type of data it collects, nor for what objective.

Microsoft responded to the DPA's claims in a statement, saying that it has added several new privacy features to Windows 10 which provide "clear choices to our customers".

Although collection of data is a generally unpopular practice from a consumer standpoint, Microsoft does have valid uses and benefits from collecting extensive metadata.

Edge's mobile app offers a number of features for those who also use the browser on PC. Full telemetry is considered highly intrusive by many and collects detailed app usage reports in addition to web browsing behaviors within Edge. Because of the company's approach to data collection, the users can't provide valid consent to Microsoft, according to the European Union data protection legislation.

On Friday, DPA said that they conducted a thorough investigation of Microsoft Windows 10 Home and Pro operating systems, and found that the users are not clearly informed "about the type of data it uses, and for which goal". "They are not informed which data are being used for what goal, neither that based on these data, personalized advertisements and recommendations can be presented, if those users have not opted out from these default settings on installation or afterwards".

Continue on PC: Go anywhere and pick up where you left off by seamlessly moving content between your mobile device and PC (requires Windows 10 Fall Creator's Update). "This approach gives us more control and better performance than using the Android WebView control, but means that we are shipping our own copy of the rendering engine in the app".

As operating systems and browsers become more and more secure malicious actors are finding it increasingly more worthwhile targeting the unchanging weak link in the chain, the user, using techniques such as phishing and spear phishing to trick users into willingly giving up their important data and credentials.

The company's default browser for Windows 10 is an uncluttered Internet Explorer replacement. The DPA has not yet responded to Microsoft's rebuttal, meaning there is definitely more time for this latest saga to develop. As a matter of fact, launching the iOS and Android versions of the browser is no assurance that it will dominate and push others aside; a lot still has to be done.
