The company has now changed its name into "Virgin Hyperloop One".

Richard Branson's Virgin Group is backing Hyperloop One with an undisclosed investment into technology that could one day transport people from London to Edinburgh in 50 minutes. Headquartered in Los Angeles, the company was Co-founded by Executive Chairman, Shervin Pishevar and President of Engineering, Josh Giegel, and is led by CEO Rob Lloyd.

Hyperloop One said they already have projects afoot in the United States, United Arab Emirates, India, Canada, Finland, and the Netherlands, and hope to accelerate commercialization with the help of the Virgin Group.

Its tracks use magnetic levitation and the pod glides at airline speeds for long distances.

The technology for Hyperloop One is now in the early stages of commercialisation, after the successful completion of the first full-scale hyperloop systems test.

The company did not disclose the size of the investment.

"Virgin has been known for investing in and creating innovative companies over the years, and I look forward to making history together as we bring Hyperloop to the world as Virgin Hyperloop One".

"Virgin Hyperloop One are leading the way in these efforts", he continued, noting that the company is "working on exciting projects in the Middle East, Europe, India, Canada, and the U.S.".

Richard Branson's Virgin Group is betting big on near-supersonic Hyperloop transport system.

"Importantly, Virgin Hyperloop One will be all-electric and the team is working on ensuing it is a responsible and sustainable form of transport too".

"Our goal is to make travel fun again". The pod magnetically levitates inside the tube in near-vacuum, without any air resistance.

Branson's Virgin Galactic was granted an operating license in 2016 to fly its passenger rocketship SpaceShipTwo with the world's first paying space tourists aboard once final safety tests are completed. The West Coast Main Line, which HS2 will mostly duplicate, is at near full capacity during morning peak hours on its southern stretches, with 200kph (125mph) trains running at intervals of just 120 seconds.
