Detroit Lions stunned by the New Orleans Saints, 52-38

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has been hurting this week because of an ankle injury

The three defensive scores - which also included an end-zone sack of Stafford and fumble recovery by safety Kenny Vaccaro on the Lions' first possession - were one more than the Saints had in the previous four seasons combined.

The Lions suffered a 52-38 defeat at the hands of the Saints over the weekend. The punt team pinned the Lions at the 1, and on the Lions' second play of the possession, Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan intercepted a pass in the end zone, extending the lead back to two touchdowns with 5:08 remaining.

But the Saints (3-2) did manage to survive for a roller-coaster 52-38 victory over the Detroit Lions, thanks to their defense scoring three touchdowns for the first time in franchise history. If the Saints could have survived two more quarters, they would have become the first National Football League team ever to go the first five games of the season without a turnover.

Neither defense is great overall and both clubs can put up points.

Missing on history: The Saints turned the ball over three times in the second half (two interceptions by Brees and a fumble by Ingram) - their first three turnovers of the season.

As the first period wound down, Brees methodically picked apart the Lions defense while moving steadily downfield to a 41-yard field goal by Wil Lutz and a 17-7 advantage with just:04 showing on the clock.

Stat of the game: 16 passes defensed for the Saints.

In case you missed it: The Saints' streak without a turnover to start the season is over.

Injuries: The Saints seemed to have a healthy day until linebacker Nate Stuper exited late in the fourth quarter. Wide receivers Golden Tate and Marvin Jones made some spectacular plays against the Saints. There's no excuse for the Detroit Lions playing a guy Mihalik at left tackle in a real game-and they actually did it by choice before having to do it by necessity.
