Knife-wielding man wounds five people in Munich

Police in Munich Germany are hunting an knifeman who is thought to have stabbed several people in the central square train station. Authorities have urged locals to remain indoors

The motivation for the attack is still unclear as the suspect refused to make a statement during his interrogation by police.

Police spokesman Marcus da Gloria Martins said the man was arrested about three hours after Saturday morning's incident in an area near downtown Munich.

Writing on Twitter, Munich Police said: 'We are searching for the perpetrator of the attack with all available police'.

They urged people in the city to remain at home as they had received conflicting information about which way the attacker had gone. They mainly had superficial stab wounds and in at least one case had been hit.

Police issued a description of the suspect, who appeared to be about 40-years-old and riding a black bicycle.

Officials believe that the suspect - who had a previous police record - has psychological problems. Local police described the perpetrator of the attack as a man in his forties, wearing grey trousers and a running jacket, who fled on a black bicycle.

Munich police chief Hubertus Andrae told a news conference that eight people have been lightly injured in the attack and that the suspect was known to police from previous offences, including burglary.

The six people caught up in the assault were five men and a woman.
