Bannon Says George W. Bush Presidency Was Most "Destructive" in History

Former President George W. Bush

A spokesperson for Bush denied that the speech was directed at Trump.

"There has not been a more destructive presidency than George Bush's", Bannon told a big crowd at the California Republican Party convention, putting at center stage the sharp divisions that exist within Republicans.

Without mentioning President Donald Trump by name, former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama each stood before a microphone Thursday and took the Trump era to task for a lack of civility, its divisive nature and how it compromises American ideals.

In a speech in NY earlier this week, Mr Bush attacked "nationalism distorted into nativism" and said the country had "forgotten the dynamism that immigration has always brought to America".

Bush also spoke at an event hours earlier on Thursday in NY, hosted by his George W. Bush Institute, where he outlined what he said were "new and serious threats" to democracy. "It was clear he didn't understand anything he was talking about", Bannon said. "He has no earthly idea of whether he's coming or going, just like it was when he was president of the United States". "Bush-for-'destructive'-presidency" target="_blank">according to The Associated Press.

The two former presidents spoke separately at different events about their concerns for the current political climate, in comments that could be quite easily seen as a rebuke of Trump and his ethos. "This means people of every race, religion and ethnicity can be fully and equally American", Bush said. "It's about one thing: Are you a citizen of the United States of America?" While expressing reverence for McCain's military service and compassion for his recent cancer diagnosis, Bannon said he doesn't think much of McCain as a politician.

Bush is not running for office and has not campaigned for any candidates this year.
