Gunman takes staff hostage at Nuneaton bowling alley

Bermuda Park is on lockdown after a gunman took hostages

Warwickshire police had ruled out any connection with "terrorist activity" after saying they were dealing with an "ongoing incident" at the leisure park in Nuneaton.

One man who said he was at a children's party at the bowling alley said he initially thought it was a joke when a staff member told him to leave because a gunman was inside.

Police confirmed that no one was injured in the incident, although the local ambulance service said the suspect had been treated at the scene before being taken to a hospital.

Warwickshire Police responded to a major situation on Sunday (local time) at Bermuda Park, a shopping and leisure centre in Nuneaton, about 7.5 miles north of the town of Coventry.

Police said the problem was not terror-related, but provided no details.

Chris Clegg, operations director of MFA Bowl, said: "He (the suspect) has been arrested and the two staff are safe".

Mehdi Amshar, chief executive of the MFA Bowl bowling alley chain, told Sky News that he was informed the two employees were being held at gunpoint at the company's Nuneaton branch.

Mr Amshar said he believed the gunman was an ex-husband or former boyfriend of an employee, but he couldn't be sure.

A spokesman for Warwickshire Police tweeted: "Officers are now dealing with an ongoing incident at Bermuda Park, #Nuneaton". "Our priority is the safety of our staff and customers", he told Sky News.

Another witness at the restaurant, Laura Mjeshtri, said a waitress ran in and said the place was on lockdown.

Another witness from the same restaurant, Carl Lenton, described a "quite scary" situation unfolding outside.

"At about 4pm the police officer said if your auto is parked near the building we will go and get your vehicle".

He tweeted: "Madness up Nuneaton bowling man got 2 hostages & a shotgun just seen him walk a hostage to the door with the shotgun to his head #Chaos".

Chief Superintendent Alex Franklin-Smith said: "We are pleased we were able to bring this incident to a peaceful resolution and there were no injuries".

A mother has told Sky News how she tried to keep her two young daughters safe by "popping them under the table".

"But I have every confidence that Warwickshire Police are capable and are able to deal with what looks like a very hard situation".
