House GOP leaders launch investigation into FBI's Clinton email probe

Hillary Clinton Caroline Codsi

Two key House committees have launched a joint investigation into decisions the Department of Justice made in 2016 during the presidential election.

"We're not going to jump to any conclusions at this time", Nunes said.

Democrats have said Republican focus on the uranium deal is an attempt to distract from the Russian Federation probes.

The House Oversight and Intelligence committees' investigation also resurrects allegations that Clinton or others in the Obama administration mishandled a government decision to green-light a deal giving Russian Federation control over a sizable percentage of the United States' uranium resources.

Devin Nunes' announcement came one week after The Hill published a report on a "racketeering scheme. created to benefit former President Bill Clinton's charitable foundation during the time Secretary of State Hillary Clinton served on a government body that provided a favorable decision to Moscow". "That will be the start of the probe", Nunes said.

Nunes added that he has not spoken to anyone at the White House on the matter.

In 2010, a Canadian company called Uranium One, which had mining stakes around the world, was bought by Rosatom, a state-owned Russian corporation, giving Rosatom oversight of one-fifth of US uranium production.

According to Nunes, the investigation will focus on whether the FBI or Department of Justice investigated the deal - and why Congress wasn't informed, if any probes were conducted.

President Trump was elected almost a year ago, but the controversy over Hillary Clinton's emails is getting a new boost from key House Republicans. Clinton, who was Secretary of State at the time, had to approve the deal in the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS).

Allegations surrounding the uranium deal resurfaced this past week when The Hill reported the FBI was investigating the donations and did not inform Congress. But that effort went far, far beyond any schemes to help elect Donald Trump president.

Clinton was not mentioned during the press conference as part of the Russian Federation investigation.

"Seven years ago this month, I raised these objections with the treasury secretary who said they were being fully investigated and we want to see what happened to that inquiry", said King.

Grassley claims that the DOJ, under Obama, "threatened" the informant with prosecution "if he disclosed details of his involvement in the investigation". Nunes, now the subject of an ethics inquiry for his actions, handed over the reins of the committee's investigation of Russian election meddling to Rep. Michael Conaway, R-Texas, but he has not recused himself from the inquiry.
