Singapore to stop vehicle population growth from Feb 2018

Singapore to halt car population growth from next year SINGAPORE-AUTOS FILE

LTA did leave the growth rate for Category C (goods vehicles and buses) at 0.25%.

The Land Transport Authority said the growth gap for vehicles and motorcycles will reduce from 0.25 to zero percent. The state already is the most expensive place to own a vehicle and has several processes to avoid the traffic jams that affect other cities.

The LTA says it will review the vehicle growth rate again in 2020.

Currently, it factors in a growth rate of 0.25 per cent per year.

Almost 12 percent of land area in Singapore, one of the world's most expensive places to own a vehicle, is taken up by roads and officials want to ensure the most productive use of the remaining space.

Singapore has expanded its rail network length by 30 per cent and has added new routes and capacity in its bus network.

Reputed news publications like The Guardian have re-published the piece, entitled Singapore: no more cars allowed on the road, government says, on their website. This means an average monthly quota of 8,635, continuing a decline that started last quarter.

The last time LTA did something similar was in October 2014, when they cut the vehicle growth rate from 0.5% to 0.25% for the period between Feb 2015 and february 2018.

From August 2012, the growth rate was 1% per annum.

Category A refers to cars up to 1,600 CC and 97 KW, and Category B refers to cars above 1,600 CC or 97 KW, while Category D refers to motorcycles. The Category B quota will increase 7 per cent to 8,246, while Category D will go up from 2,862 to 3,053 (up 6.67 per cent).

In a statement, Singapore's Land Transport Authority said: "LTA will continue to improve our public transport system".

Singapore requires auto owners to buy permits - called Certificates of Entitlement (COE) - that allow holders to own their vehicles for 10 years.

"(A reduction in vehicles allowed) doesn't help to ease the unhappiness that have resulted among commuters due to the perceived lack of reliability", he said.
