The camera was redesigned and packaged with the Xbox One at the launch of that console, but the lack of developer support has left it as a redundant device.

Although Microsoft will continue to support Kinect on Xbox, the company will stop selling it once existing stocks have been sold out at retailers.

When Microsoft began preparing for the launch of the Xbox One, the Kinect was first planned to be a required part of the console. Microsoft had planned on making the Xbox One the all-in-one entertainment device with its gaming, television and multi-media needs, but the people who actually play video games were taken aback by the "TV! TV!"

Though Kinect itself is pretty much dead, its underlying technology will live on in the form of Microsoft's augmented reality Hololens (which uses the Kinect sensor) and applications such as biometric security that use 3D tracking of the human face. The University of Minnesota has also used it to help diagnose disorders in children and many others use it for medical imaging.

Microsoft has ended production of Kinect, its motion-tracking games controller. Microsoft originally positioned the Xbox One as an "all-in-one entertainment device" that could play games, video and music apps, and give you direct access to cable TV.

Trump Calls on NFL Players Again to 'Stand for the National Anthem'
Donald Trump refuses to take a knee when it comes to countering the wave of national anthem protests across the NFL. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said any of his players kneeling during the anthem risked being benched.

These last few years have been tough for the Kinect accessory.

After seven years on the market in multiple iterations, Microsoft has confirmed in an interview that the Kinect will no longer be produced. But again, Kinect, which could also be used to send voice commands to the console in addition to controlling on-screen games, fell flat among most Xbox users. It never did warrant the extra cost - $150 - and bundling it with the Xbox One didn't do it any favors.

Back in 2010, Microsoft had a swing and a miss with the original Kinect sensor.

Kinect Star Wars was one of the most highly-anticipated Kinect games when it was announced - after all, it promised to let you act out your fantasies of being a Jedi with your whole body, and that's cool.
