National Prescription Drug Take Back Day happening this Saturday

The Drug Enforcement Administration is conducting the 14 annual Drug Take-Back initiative this Saturday, Oct. 28 from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. That is why the DEA and thousands of its state, local and tribal law-enforcement and community partners are holding this Prescription Drug Take-Back Day at over 5,000 sites around the country. The event is meant to encourage the safe and proper disposal of unwanted or expired medications.

There will also be a collection site in the parking lot next to Kaiser Permanente at 3501 Stockdale Highway.

To help combat the problem, the Department of Health and Human Services suggests parents speak to their children early and often about the dangers of prescription drug abuse.

Authorities in San Diego and Imperial counties collected more than nine tons in 2016, according to the DEA.

Chief Ernie Bassett said his departments in Granville and Whitehall are not hosting special take back day events, but that they are always collecting medication. The drop off service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked. Bring your pills for disposal to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office Safety Complex at 1825 W. Willow St. In all 13 previous collection events, the DEA and its partners took in more than 4,050 tons of pills.

Flushing medications down the toilet or throwing them in the trash pose potential safety and health hazards.

Medicines left in home cabinets can lead to misuse and abuse of the drugs.

America is experiencing an epidemic of addiction, overdose and death due to abuse of prescription drugs, particularly opioid painkillers.

It's important to dispose of unwanted medications the right way.
