Sushma Swaraj seeks investigation in Sherin Mathews adoption

Orphanage owner in India: Texas girl had no eating problem

Sherin Mathews, the three-year-old Indian girl whose adoptive father claimed she choked while drinking milk, was "adjusting well" at her new home in the U.S. but feeding her was becoming a "challenge", according to reports submitted to the nodal adoption agency in India.

Sherin Mathews was found in a drain in suburban Dallas this week.

Sherin's adopted father, Wesley Mathews, has been arrested on a charge of felony injury to a child.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Friday asked Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi to probe the adoption process of Sherin Mathews, an Indian-American girl who was allegedly killed by her foster father in the United States.

Wesley Matthews is now in the Dallas County jail on suicide watch.

Police in Richardson city had gone door-to-door in the neighborhood and used cadaver dogs, helicopters and drones to look the missing toddler, who was adopted past year by the Indian-American couple, Wesley Mathews and Sini Mathews.

"I have so many questions about what happened to her", Kumari said.

The CARA source said that the child was undernourished right from the time she was adopted and weighed less for a girl at her age. He told police that she choked before she had no pulse and he thought she had died.

Sini is a registered nurse, and investigators have focused on why Wesley did not alert Sini as Sherin started to choke. Mitch Nolte, an attorney for Sini Mathews, said in a written statement yesterday that she has submitted to several long interviews with police since Oct 7, and because she had nothing to do with the "death or removal" of the child's body, her lawyers see no need for her to "endure further police interrogation".

Kumari said the girl, named Saraswati, was cheerful. Her body was discovered after over two weeks of searches by police officials in Texas on Sunday.

"I think everybody is just ready for closure and we just want her to be at peace", said resident Gauthami Vemula.
