Baseballer gets five-game ban for racist gesture

Astros' Gurriel may be punished for gesture at LA's Darvish

Pitcher Jake Diekman used an emoji to call the gesture trash, and outfielder Ryan Rua said "really hope that gesture from Gurriel wasnt directed towards Yu.no place for that".

Gurriel, a 33-year-old from Cuba, made the gesture shortly after homering to start Houston's four-run second inning. "Japan opened my doors to the game of baseball and I didn't mean to offend them".

"He has handled this entire hard situation in an exemplary way", Manfred said of Darvish.

The Astros' manager A.J. Hinch described Gurriel as "remorseful", according to the L.A. Times. "[And] I was impressed in my conversation with Yu Darvish by his desire to move forward, and I felt that moving the suspension to the beginning of the season would help in that regard". I would also like to apologizs to the Dodgers organisation, the Astros, Major League Baseball and to all fans across the game, ' he said.

'Acting like that, you just disrespect all the people around the world, ' he said in Japanese through a translator.

"No-one is flawless", Darvish posted on social media.

Darvish was born in Japan to a Japanese mother and Iranian father.

Evan Gattis is the Houston Astros' designated hitter and bats seventh in Game 3 on Friday night as the World Series shifts to the American League ballpark.

Dodgers manger Dave Roberts said he was happy that Manfred dealt with the issue swiftly so that the focus can get back to playing baseball. Matt Joyce of the Oakland Athletics and the Blue Jays' Kevin Pillar were both suspended for two games this season after using gay slurs in separate incidents, so there's already some precedent for the commissioner to take action.

"There is no excuse or explanation that makes that type of behavior acceptable". For me, he's always been one of the best pitchers. This has been a talking point amongst the media and fans, though Gurriel was still cheered by Astros fans when he was announced in the line-up on Saturday.

But even if Major League Baseball elects to suspend Gurriel, he's nearly certain to appeal, which likely would delay the process so that a decision isn't made until after the World Series.
