GameStop offers used video game rentals with PowerPass program

In effect, this partially puts GameStop in direct competition with RedBox, which already enjoys a bit of an edge in the game rental business with its widely dispersed units.

With the Power Pass, subscribers can play any used game for as long as they'd like, swap it for a different used game, and then keep the last game that they choose after their six month subscription is up.

The person using the PowerPass also must be a PowerUp Rewards member, which is how GameStop will keep record of the rentals checked in and out, said spokesman Joey Mooring. It doesn't matter how new or old that game is.

The program, says Mashable's Adam Rosenberg, will run you $60 for six months. So, if you really like Call of Duty: WW2, you can keep it and not feel like you wasted any money. That's just after the flurry of 2017 video game releases for the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PS4 wraps up. All of the details offered up by that ad are legitimate: the service will cost $60 for a 6-month subscription, working out to $10 per month.

The program is available only to PowerUp Rewards members (so that the game they've got can be tracked), and you can only choose from games on the shelf in a physical store, not from the company's online catalogue. GameStop has chose to offer its PowerUp customers a rental program.

If you're someone who likes to play a lot of games and lives near a GameStop, however, it sounds like a pretty good deal. That's the store's loyalty program. It's the upgraded loyalty program that earns you bonus points and a subscription to Game Informer magazine.
