Bills get WR Kelvin Benjamin in surprise trade with Panthers

Bills agree to acquire WR Benjamin from Panthers for a pair of draft picks

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) - The Buffalo Bills have upgraded their patchwork group of receivers by agreeing to acquire Kelvin Benjamin in a trade with the Carolina Panthers. A report by ESPN has relayed the information on this trade and the speculation on why it took place.

But remember that Panthers GM Marty Hurney and first-year Buffalo GM Brandon Beane (a former Panthers lifer) are long friends. And third-year wideout Devin Funchess is having the sort of breakout season everyone expected of him last year. Benjamin alone has 32 receptions and 475 receiving yards.

Benjamin was picked 28th in the 2014 draft by the Panthers and proved to be a shrewd pick in his rookie season, when he caught 73 passes for 1,008 yards and nine touchdowns.

None of his scores were more important than the game-winning touchdown with 13 seconds left against Auburn in the national championship. But the former Florida State star tore his ACL in training camp the following season and hasn't quite been the same since often battling soreness in his knee and weight issues.

He commented about it on Twitter on Tuesday, calling it "madness" and asking for help understanding what the team is doing. Jordan Matthews is the Bills leading receiver through seven games, but he has just 15 receptions for 193 receiving yards. With their tight end Greg Olsen out due to a broken foot, the Panthers relied on Benjamin to carry the load of being the team's top receiver.
