Mobile US, Sprint Working To Salvage Merger

T-Mobile and Sprint work to save merger talks WSJ

T-Mobile CEO John Legere reportedly spoke with his oft-rival, Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure, this week to make clear T-Mobile's commitment to keep negotiations alive.

T-Mobile is a better position than Sprint as a standalone company, analysts have said. The telecomm giants said that they have stopped negotiating and will remain independent entities. But no deal was announced immediately following the conclusion of a ban on merger talks in April that was associated with a USA government auction of wireless airwaves.

Reuters also speculated that the atypical nature of Saturday's joint statement may signify that the two companies are trying to preserve a relationship and sustain the possibility of an eventual return to talks.

The other day, Sprint majority owner SoftBank had made a decision to end merger talks with T-Mobile and its majority owner Deutsche Telekomover which side would have majority control of the combined firm. But T-Mobile won't pursue a deal that doesn't "result in superior long-term value for T-Mobile's shareholders compared to our outstanding stand-alone performance and track record", he said. The decision to call off merger talks came after a meeting involving the heads of all four companies, according to The Wall Street Journal.

That news was confirmed Saturday with a statement posted on the T-Mobile website.

Failure to clinch an agreement leaves SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, a dealmaker who raised close to $100 billion for his Vision Fund to invest in technology companies, with the need to find another option for Sprint.

The long-sought merger reportedly fell apart because SoftBank was unhappy with the latest terms, which would have given Deutsche Telekom majority ownership of both carriers. But with the new Trump administration, it was thought regulators might be more relaxed about a merger. "We won't stop now".
