American woman wins NYC Marathon for first time in 40 years

NYC Marathon winners: Flanagan 1st American since 1977

Keitany had won three straight NY marathons, but Flanagan pulled away from the Kenyan great with about three miles to go.

An emotional Flanagan after her NYC Marathon win, the first by an American woman in 40 years.

Flanagan posted an unofficial time of 2 hours, 26 minutes, 53 seconds.

Kipsang finished second just three second behind Kamworor. Mamitu Daska, of Ethiopia, competing in the New York City Marathon for the first time, finished third with a time of 2:28:08.

Keitany, who finished second with a time of 2:27:54, hugged Flanagan, who had the American flag already draped over her shoulders. She had blown away the field here a year ago, winning by a margin (3 minutes 34 seconds) not seen in the women's race since 1980.

American running great and 2009 NY victor Meb Keflezighi completed his 26th and final marathon in 11th place at 2:15:29, collapsing as he crossed the finish.

Beating Keitany in NY may be running's toughest test right now.

Kipsang is one of five men in the NY field to have run a marathon in under 2:07 - the others are Tadesse Abraham (Switzerland), Lemi Berhanu (Ethiopia), Lelisa Desisa (Ethiopia) and Geoffrey Kamworor (Kenya).

The race went off without interruption five days after the bike path terror attack killed eight in lower Manhattan.

Comedian Kevin Hart is the biggest celebrity running NY. "This is my first marathon victory".

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city was expecting 2 million fans to line the course.

Kenya's Mary Keitany, who was chasing her fourth consecutive NY women's victory, settled for second, 61 seconds behind Flangan, with Ethiopia's Mamitu Daska third in 2:28:08.

"New York City said strongly we're not giving into terrorists", de Blasio said, adding "That's a message we're sending the whole world".
