NFL Week 9: Keys for Giants vs. Rams

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Goff threw three touchdowns in the first half, finishing with 311 yards passing in arguably his best game as a pro. It marked the third time they have topped 40 points this season - after not scoring 40 points at all over the previous two seasons - and gave them a plus-108 point margin that is the NFL's best.

And oh, by the way, the team is still undefeated in matchups away from the Coliseum this year - pushing that record to 5-0.

On Sunday, in the middle of their third long trip in a four-week stretch, the Rams turned the mood at MetLife Stadium grayer than the sky that hovered above it.

The Rams didn't do much on the ground but they didn't need to, as Todd Gurley finished with 59 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries, and also caught two passes for 45 yards.

The only spot of trouble the Rams ran into came next, when the Giants went on a 14-play, 67-yard drive and tied the game 7-7 on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Manning to Tavarres King.

One can only imagine Mara reaching that point Sunday when the Giants were beaten badly on their home field 51-17 by the Los Angeles Rams.

The Rams scored their third touchdown of the third quarter with 3:28 remaining, when Gurley scored on a four-yard run to put the Rams up 48-10. And from there, the visitors poured it on. It's the eighth game of the season, and the 2017 Rams have already outscored the 2016 Rams.

Offensive pass interference and chop block penalties left the Rams with 3rd-and-33 from their own 48. The Rams threw a quick wide receiver screen to Robert Woods, who dashed through the middle of the defense for a 52-yard touchdown catch-and-run.

According to ESPN Stats and Info, it's the first time a team has scored a touchdown with a down-and-distance of at least 33 yards since 2001. Watkins' longest reception of the season gave the Rams a 24-7 lead. He was the team's second-leading tackler in the preseason finale against New England.

On the next drive, the Rams reached the Giants' red zone again but had to settle for a Greg Zuerlein 27-yard field goal and a 10-7 lead in the first minute of the second quarter.

The onslaught continued in the third quarter, as the Rams scored 21 points in the period to remove all doubt. They caused more problems in NY than a subway delay.

NY pulled a bit closer just after Manning became just the seventh quarterback in National Football League history to throw for over 50,000 yards. Gurley added 104 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns, giving him 10 on the year - tying the career high he set in a dynamic rookie season.
