Koenigsegg Agera RS Is Now The World's Fastest Car

An 11-mile section of state Route 160 between Las Vegas and Pahrump will close Saturday and Sunday as Swedish supercar company Koenigsegg attempts to set the world record for the fastest productio

The record is then an average of both speeds, to negate the effect of things like incline and wind speed.

277.9mph - and that's the average. The speed in other, uphill, upwind direction was 271mph.

It turns out the Koenigsegg Agera RS is quite fast.

It's the final, ultimate model in the company's long-serving Agera line.

Koenigsegg's factory test driver Niklas Lija drove Agera RS with its 1,144bhp, 5.0-litre turbo V8 to set the new record. The closure was set to be in place for two days but the Koenigsegg team broke the record early on the first day.

Where did the Koenigsegg record run happen?

Koenigsegg closed an 11-mile stretch of Nevada's Route 160 between Las Vegas and Pahrump in its world land speed record attempt for a production vehicle. The 0-400-0 kilometer per hour record, previously set by the Bugatti Chiron at 42 seconds, was beaten by the Koenigsegg Agera RS with a time of just over 37 seconds.

The previous record was held by the Venom GT, built by Texas-based auto tuning company Hennessey.

Bugatti's Veyron Super Sport reached 269.86mph at VW's Ehra-Lessien test centre in 2010. When un-restricted, Bugatti claims 310mph potential. You'd hesitate to call Michelin's Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres "stock" given their capability, nevertheless they are still Y rated - which means that the manufacturer guarantees them up to 186mph; quite some way from 277.9mph. It was commented that the tyres still looked brand new after the runs, but Michelin are now working on a more capable tyre, which will be used by Bugatti to test the true top speed of the Chiron, which is now limited to 261mph.

The day a production auto cracks the magic, and frankly terrifying, 300mph mark, is getting closer...
