Hope Solo accuses Sepp Blatter of 'grabbing' her inappropriately

Solo is a two-time gold winner at the Olympics and said she was left'in shock by the Fifa president's alleged grope

Abby Wambach of the United States of America receives the FIFA Women's World Player of the Year award from US teammate Hope Solo and FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter during the FIFA Ballon d'Or Gala 2012 at the Kongresshaus on January 7, 2013 in Zurich, Switzerland.

Disgraced ex-Fifa president Sepp Blatter has been accused of sexual assault by veteran USA women's goalkeeper Hope Solo.

Ex-FIFA president Sepp Blatter has denied Hope Solo's accusations.

USA forward Alex Morgan has said that Blatter failed to recognize her at the annual awards event in 2012, even though she was one of three nominees for the women's Player of the Year.

Blatter dismissed Solo's claims, telling the Guardian newspaper that the allegation "is ridiculous". "I was in shock, completely shaken", she entrusted. She had to pull herself together quickly to give the award to Wambach.

On the official Fifa film of the event, which was hosted by the Dutch football legend Ruud Gullit and the broadcaster Kay Murray, Solo was shown coming on to the stage with Blatter from behind a curtain at the back of the stage, to present the award to Wambach.

"It's out of control, not just in Hollywood but everywhere", Solo said, referencing the wave of sexual harassment and assault allegations against high-profile men in entertainment and politics, which was triggered by a scandal involving movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. I always felt I'd "handled it' and stood up for myself in those situations, but there were never any consequences for the perpetrators".

She said: "Yes, I've seen it throughout my entire career. I wish more women, especially in football, would speak against it, about the experiences, because some of those people still work [in football]".

"I'm actually very disappointed with the women who haven't spoken about it in the sports world", Solo told Expresso.

Blatter, 81, was Federation Internationale de Football Association president from 1998 until 2015, when he was banned in relation to a payment of two million Swiss francs (€1.7m) to former UEFA chief Michel Platini.

"I've seen it in sports. After [the ceremony] I have not seen and have not been able to confront it", said the sport. "I don't know why more players don't speak out".

Blatter also famously argued in 2004 that players could boost the popularity of the women's game by wearing tighter shorts.
