UFC's Conor McGregor involved in postfight altercation with referee

Conor McGregor

The head of the commission that oversaw Friday's Bellator 187 event has issued a statement regarding a fracas involving UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor.

McGregor burst in as the fight ended and then jumped on Ward to celebrate.

Since then McGregor has said he will look to return to his usual sport of MMA in the UFC for his next fight, but has left the door open to a future return to the sweet science.

When it comes to Conor McGregor, expect the unexpected.

The referee immediately ran to McGregor in an attempt to get him to leave the cage and the pair became involved in an altercation.

Still. gotta think there's gonna be hell to pay for his actions.

Amid their celebration, veteran MMA ref, Marc Goddard, tried to break things up and told McGregor to get out of the ring.

It sparked a melee as McGregor himself came back and retaliated by pushing the referee, shouting and pointing at him before he was escorted out of the octagon.

Goddard, who also clashed with McGregor recently during Artem Lobov's fight with Andre Fili at UFC Fight Night 118 in Gdansk, Poland, spoke about the incident at Bellator 187 during a statement on his Twitter account.

Ward initially reacted with a fighter's instinct - like he had just been taken down - after McGregor had leapt on top of him.

Jason High was released from the organization after shoving a referee after a fight in 2014. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, the UFC does to punish McGregor.

It's unclear if he will face any repercussions for his actions.
