"Was in the US for treatment this month and flys back tomorrow to start chemo here".

He also played for the likes of Celtic, Sunderland, Leeds and QPR before a spell in Australia that saw him represent Perth Glory, Brisbane Roar and Melbourne City over a three-year period.

"I heard recently but I didn't know how bad it was", he said. "We are all thinking of him and his family and hope he can pull through and be strong".

Ian Harte - who played for Ireland with Miller - said: "Very sad news about one of my old teammates Liam Miller, thinking of him and his family at this very hard time".

Many of his former clubs and colleagues have publicly expressed their support for Miller through social media.

Ex-Ireland team mate Noel Hunt tweeted: "Such sad news about my old room mate Liam Miller".

It has been reported that the former Republic of Ireland worldwide is fighting pancreatic cancer, although this is unconfirmed.

The Scottish champions said in a post on their official Twitter account: "The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic Football Club are with Liam Miller and his family at this time".
