The shooting broke out at a home in Tehama County, in Northern California and continued at the school, local authorities were quoted as saying. The gunman was shot and killed by police, according to reporters on the scene.

Tehama County is a rural community about a hundred miles north of Sacramento.

The Sherrif's office said that the shooting happened at around 8:00 AM local time with reports of somebody barricaded in a structure and of multiple victims.

"There was an active shooter out there earlier this morning", said Jeanine Quist, an administrative assistant with the Corning Union Elementary School District. A second child and a female adult were shot in a truck, authorities said.

The gunman was killed after two officers engaged the shooter, law enforcement officials said. The alleged shooter has also been killed by police.

Some students at the school were medically evacuated; it's not clear yet how many people were injured in the shooting. The gunman had a semi-automatic rifle and two handguns. A woman and another child were shot in a truck that was driving near the school and taken to the hospital, he added.

"The insane thing is that the neighbor has been shooting a lot of bullets lately, hundreds of rounds, large magazines", the unnamed witness told KCRA. "We made it aware that this guy is insane and he's been threatening us". Mercy Medical Center in Redding received three patients, including one who also was transferred elsewhere, said Harter, whose company, Dignity Health, runs both hospitals.

Gov. Jerry brown issued a statement on the shooting, saying: "Anne and I are saddened to hear about today's violence in Tehama County, which shockingly involved schoolchildren".
