AT&T, Comcast win as Trump FCC urges end of Obama web rules

Net neutrality is the principle that internet providers treat all web traffic equally, and it's essentially how the internet has worked since its inception.

The proposal puts Pai, who was appointed by President Donald Trump, into position to kill a rule that survived a court challenge from broadband providers a year ago.

If the ownership cap is eased, as expected, by the Republican-controlled, 5-member commission, it would be a boost to Sinclair Broadcast Group as it looks to close its $3.9 billion purchase of Tribune Media.

"Under my proposal, the federal government will stop micromanaging the internet", said Pai in a statement.

During President Barack Obama's tenure, the then head of F.C.C Tom Wheeler said that the rules were vital as they prevented companies such as Verizon to low down the operations of services like Netflix.

Pai distributed his alternative plan to other FCC commissioners Tuesday in preparation for a December 14 vote on the proposal. Pai's FCC spiked the effort to go after AT&T, even before it began rolling out a plan to undo the net neutrality rules entirely.

Under the measure, internet service providers would have to inform customers about issues including blocking, Politico reported Monday.

South Korea's Lee also added that it could have "a very significant meaning considering the current situation". A U.S. envoy said it was hard to assess the intention of Pyongyang as there had been "no signal".

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai is expected to reveal his plans for net neutrality this week.

Consumers Union called the proposal "an enormous loss for consumers" that "would give internet service providers more power and control over the websites we can visit". According to people who sought anonymity, besides Mr. Pai presenting the repeal of net neutrality, he will propose that the Federal Trade Commission be the enforcement agency for the net neutrality violation. In place of the existing rules, he added, the FCC would "simply require Internet service providers to be transparent about their practices".

The FCC's plan has also stirred up heated resistance on Reddit, where numerous users are calling for US citizens to contact their state representatives to demand their support for net neutrality.

But critics say the end of net neutrality would spell bad news for consumers, as well as for free speech. Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian and his board colleagues oppose repeal, saying stripping away net neutrality is a money grab for the ISP's, allowing them to make more money by charging content providers and services.

"The FTC stands ready to protect broadband subscribers from anticompetitive, unfair, or deceptive acts and practices just as we protect consumers in the rest of the Internet ecosystem", Ohlhausen said in a statement Tuesday.

Pai, who has repeatedly rejected claims that the FCC is making rules changes with Sinclair in mind, said the review will include public input.
