Islamabad protesters 'contacted India': Ashan Iqbal

Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal

Protesters in groups of various sizes also took to the streets in Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Khanewal, Layyah, Vihari, Dera Ghazi Khan and others cities in Punjab province and in the northwestern city of Peshawar, as well as in southern city of Hyderabad, to show solidarity with the Islamabad protesters.

The operation was launched after Islamabad High Court (IHC) issued contempt of court notice against Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal as he failed to clear the roads off the protesters.

The protesters want the resignation of law minister Zahid Hamid for altering the declaration of lawmakers with regard to Finality of the Prophethood - a change which the government has already reversed.

The Pakistani army has been called in to restore order to the capital after clashes between anti-blasphemy protesters and police left at least 174 people injured. They have fired tear gas shells [at security forces], they also cut the fibre optic cables of cameras that were monitoring their protest, " Dawn reported.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority ordered a media blackout.

Pakistan's media regulator barred local TV channels from broadcasting live images from the scene, though protesters were still using Facebook Live and other social media.

As the clashes intensified, Pakistan's powerful military chief phoned the prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to urge the situation be handled "peacefully", military spokesman Major General Asif Ghafoor said on Twitter.

Heavy contingents of police, FC and Rangers were deployed to the interchange. Nine people were injured and taken to a nearby hospital, doctors said. But later violence has led to injuries to as many as 200 people according to hospitals in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. "First, they stole our mobiles and wallets, and then they beat us mercilessly with sticks and their fists", he said.

Later in the day, security forces appeared to face difficulty clearing the crucial intersection as more and more supporters joined protesters at the site, a bridge between the capital and Rawalpindi.

Police have also used water cannons to disperse the protesters after the capital was paralysed due to the sit-in which has been ongoing for nearly three weeks.

In Lahore, an unruly mob torched a vehicle and damaged others with stoning and staged sit-ins at four key areas in the city.

Several men protesting the Faizabad crackdown also attempted to break into the house of former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar in Rawalpindi.
