Meet Miss Universe 2017: South Africa's Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters

Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa have clinched the much coveted crown. The second runner-up was Miss Jamaica Davina Bennett. "I am Miss Universe and this is for you".

And she also managed to keep a straight face during Fergie's performance. Her inspiration, role model and motivation is her half sister who is disabled.

Ninety-two women from around the world participated in the decades-old competition. "I believe in equal pay for equal work", replied the 22-year-old. But while it was enough to get her into the Top 10 during pageant night, it wasn't good enough for the Top 5, where Thailand and Venezuela were among the finalists.

DEMI-LEIGH Nel-Peters, who represented South Africa, won the Miss Universe crown Sunday.

The new Miss Universe comes with flamboyance and grace in her stunning tiara.

This year, Cambodia, Laos and Nepaul competed at the Miss Universe finals for the first time ever. The judges are also a star-studded group, featuring Jay Manuel, former judge on America's Next Top Model, Lele Pons, the Vine and YouTube star, and Wendy Fitzwilliam, the 1998 Miss Universe victor from Trinidad & Tobago. She is the second woman from her home country to earn the crown.

Last year's victor, Iris Mittenaere of France, will be in attendance to pass down her crown.

Former Miss SA and Miss World‚ Rolene Strauss‚ congratulated her friend on the win.
