Martellus Bennett Reportedly to Go on IR with Hamstring, Shoulder Injuries

The Boston Globe's Jim McBride is reporting that the New England Patriots will place tight end Martellus Bennett on injured reserve, ending his season. He had meant to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery when the Packers waived him, but he signed with the Patriots instead. There seemed to be a dispute between Bennett and the organization about the severity of his shoulder injury. As a result, Bennett's season will come to an end after making just two regular-season appearances as a member of the Patriots in 2017-18.

With Green Bay, Bennett had 24 receptions for 233 yards in seven games.

Bennett claimed he told the Packers about his ailments. In the playoffs, he had 11 catches and 98 yards. After a unusual exit from the Green Bay Packers over his shoulder, Bennett signed very quickly with the Patriots a few weeks ago. Bennett previously said 2017 could be his last season, although he backed off that in an interview after the November 12 game in Denver. Rapoport reported the tight end suffered a torn rotator cuff that caused Green Bay to waive him before New England picked him up.

If Bennett was actually serious about retirement, it's possible he's played his last game in the NFL.

Bennett mulled over his playing future beyond this season.

The 30-year-old played in two games for New England this season and caught six passes for 53 yards but was inactive for Sunday's win over the Miami Dolphins due to hamstring and shoulder injuries.

In direct correlation to the move, New England has also made a decision to place safety Nate Ebner on season-ending IR after he suffered a knee injury against the Miami Dolphins.
