Epic Games defends lawsuit against 14-year-old for cheating

Fortnite Patch to Add Xbox One X Support and More

Since Fortnite Battle Royale is a free-to-play video game, and Epic would need to provide a statement certifying that Rogers' cheating directly caused them a "mass profit loss" due to her son's actions.

His mother responds to the allegations. After this though, Epic went a bit further by suing two cheaters, one of whom is a minor who made a decision to speak out about it on YouTube, and this is where things start getting more interesting and more complicated.

She adds that instead of going after the cheaters, Epic should be targeting sites that offer warez in the first place (a bit like going after the dealer, not the addict, really).

Online multiplayer games on different systems are plagued by people who use cheat codes or take advantage of flaws in the game's inner workings to gain an edge on other players who play fairly.

It would appear however, that Epic Games isn't familiar with Delaware's laws, One of which is that it is against DE law to publish names on minors, and that he is unlikely to be the developer/distributor of the cheating tools because of his age.

Fortnite Vindertech Weapons

Fortnite's mode has an identical structure to PUBG, with 100 players air-dropped into a huge, gradually shrinking arena where they must find items to help them emerge as the sole survivor or surviving squad. Unfortunately for the Epic PR team, one of the cheaters being sued turned out to be only 14 years old, and his mom is not happy.

The authors of the game stated that using cheats leads to loss of funds. More understandably, the company may just want the threat of a lawsuit hanging in the air to deter future cheaters from making YouTube or Twitch live streams of the behavior and encouraging others to do the same. For children with unfettered access to the internet, this is an especially troublesome gray area resulting in a minefield for parents and corporations alike.

Rogue online gamers have designed, sold or used computer code to crush competitors playing the popular "Fortnite" survival video game, spoiling the experience and the creator's profit potential, the game's maker charges in a series of lawsuits. "Epic Games INC is in complete violation of this as well as other individual websites and news reporting agencies". Remarkably, even in 2017, the extent to which a company will use legal means to crackdown on this behavior is still being worked out on a case-by-case basis, with Fortnite just the latest and most visible example. She added that the studio was violating DE laws by releasing her son's name publicly, and she expects the charges are dropped in court.

You see, the poor cheater is only 14.
