Argentina ends rescue mission for crew of missing submarine

Argentina ends rescue operation

Family members of the crew accused the navy of initially withholding information about the submarine and blamed officials for not reporting the news as soon as communication with the vessel was lost.

The submarine has been missing for 15 days.Argentine Air Force members during search operations for the missing Argentine submarine ARA San Juan, at sea off the coast of Argentina.

The navy has said the vessel's captain reported water entered the snorkel and caused one of the submarine's batteries to short circuit.

After contact with the San Juan was lost, the Vienna-based Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organization, an worldwide body that runs a global network of listening posts created to check for secret atomic blasts, detected a noise the navy said could have been the submarine's implosion. "Despite the magnitude of these efforts, we've been unable to find the submarine".

Ships and aircraft still are scouring the South Atlantic for the ARA San Juan, which disappeared November 15 a few hundred kilometers off Argentina's coast.

Thousands assisted in the search

Luis Taglapietra, whose son Damián was a 27-year-old trainee, told the TN news channel: "This is perverse and impossible to understand".

A navy spokesman said this week the blast could have been triggered by a "concentration of hydrogen" caused by the battery problem reported by the captain.

Balbi said 28 ships, nine planes and 4,000 people from 18 countries were involved in the search covering 557,000 nautical miles; more, including radar monitoring.

Meanwhile, Argentine President Mauricio Macri has ordered a probe into the sub's disappearance. "He's a hero who must be recognized along with his 43 other crew members".
