Congress' top Democrats ditch Trump meet after tweet

President Donald Trump publicly humiliated Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi for bailing on a meeting at the White House to discuss end of the year budget issues.

Schumer and Pelosi said: "Given that the president doesn't see a deal between Democrats and the White House, we believe the best path forward is to continue negotiating with our Republican counterparts in Congress instead". For dramatic effect, Trump was flanked by two empty chairs where the Senate and House Minority Leaders would be sitting had they showed up to the White House.

Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan were seated at opposite ends of the large conference table.

"If the president, who already said earlier this year that 'our country needs a good shutdown, ' isn't interested in addressing the hard year end agenda, we'll work with those Republicans who are, as we did in April", the top Democrats said.

Their attempt to divide and conquer failed, though, after Republican leaders stuck by Mr. Trump and attended the meeting at the White House anyway, saying Democrats were recklessly risking a shutdown by refusing to talk to the country's chief executive and the man who must sign whatever bills Congress eventually passes. "I don't see a deal". "Now it's not even talk", Trump said, speaking from the Roosevelt Room, where he sat between to empty chairs with placards for Pelosi and Schumer.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement that Trump was applauding the committee for "taking an important step toward passing historic tax relief and reform and clearing the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act this afternoon".

But Trump went on to criticize them on immigration, crime and taxes, tweeting, "I don't see a deal!"

Republicans leaders may need to rely on some Democratic votes to get a funding resolution passed.

So what do Schumer and Pelosi have to lose by going to the mat against President Trump on this issue?

And on Capitol Hill, some progress was made on Tuesday during talks on the Republican tax bill.

While it was unlikely the missile fired in the early hours of Wednesday could yet carry a nuclear payload, the missile itself probably had the capability of reaching the United States capital, or anywhere else in the country, said David Wright, co-director of the global security programme at the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Congress must approve a new spending measure to keep the government running after a short-term spending bill agreed between Trump and the Democrats in September expires on December 8. "These issues are far too serious for these kinds of games".

"If that happens, I would absolutely blame the Democrats", he said. If it happens, it's going to be over illegals coming into the country, crime pouring into the country, no border wall, which everyone wants-I got elected partially because of the border wall.
