Houthi rebels killed in N.Yemen clashes: Army

A supporter of former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh is seen with his weapon outside of al Saleh mosque in Sana’a Yemen

"We vow to our brothers and neighbours that, after a ceasefire is in place and the blockade is lifted. we will hold dialogue directly through the legitimate authority represented by our parliament", he said.

The two groups have been fighting the government of current President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, who is backed by the Saudi-led coalition, for almost three years.

The capital Sanaa has been shaken by escalating in-violence this week between supporters of Saleh and the Houthis, with more than 40 fighters killed and injured and residents now fearing a new front in an already devastating war.

"I call on our brothers and the Arab coalition to halt their aggression, allow access to medical and relief aid, open airports and we will turn the page", Saleh said in a televised speech.

"We will deal with them in a positive way and what happened to Yemen is enough", he added.

Four supporters of Ali Abdullah Saleh were killed when a gunfight erupted on Wednesday in the center of Sanaa, after the Houthis broke into the city's main mosque complex and fired RPGs and grenades.

There was no immediate word on casualties.

In 2011, Yemen fell into chaos after an uprising deposed Saleh.

Hadi's office also commended the continuous support of the Arab alliance led by Saudi Arabia and the response to get rid of the "worst bloody sectarian coup supported by Iran". He fought six wars against the Huthis when he was president, but joined forces with them to take over the capital in 2014.

In a statement carried by the Saudi-owned Al-Hadath channel, the coalition said it was "confident of the will of the leaders and sons" of Saleh's GPC party to return to Arab fold.

"It is not odd or surprising that Saleh turns his back on a partnership he never believed in", the group's political bureau said in a statement.

The Houthis' Ansarullah group, in a statement issued on its Twitter account, described the clashes as "regrettable".

Mr Saleh's GPC party accused the Houthis of failing to honour a truce and said in a statement on its website that the Houthis bear responsibility for dragging the country into a civil war.

A statement from Saleh's party called for its loyal armed tribes and supporters to fight against Houthis.

The Houthi group leader, Abdel-Malek al-Houthi, had earlier appealed to Mr Saleh to avoid any escalation, saying that the crisis would only serve Yemen's enemies. The infighting threatens to unravel the fragile rebel alliance that controls the capital and has been battling the Saudi-backed government of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi in Yemen's war.
