Google Enrolls 10000 Employees to Combat Abusing Contents on YouTube

The decision comes after the popular video platform - which is owned by Google - faced increasing pressure in recent weeks over content targeting or involving children.

Google has elaborated its strategy in a couple of blogs posted today, for stemming the growing tide of unpleasant video contents, which has made the services such as Twitter, Facebook and the most important source, YouTube in to the bottomless cesspools of terrorist propaganda, Nazi-fueled rage and fake news.

"Some bad actors are exploiting our openness to mislead, manipulate, harass or even harm", Wojcicki said, adding that YouTube's trust and safety teams have reviewed almost 2 million videos for violent extremist content over the past six months.

For instance, Wojcicki says that YouTube will have 10,000 people working to address questionable content by 2018 - noting that human reviewers are essential to training the company's machine learning systems.

In November, confectionary maker Mondelez (NASDAQ:MDLZ), Lidl, Mars and other consumer goods producers joined the boycott after The Times newspaper found YouTube was showing clips of scantily clad children in conjunction with the ads major brands. In addition, algorithms flagged about 98% of the videos removed for violent extremism.

"We believe this requires a new approach to advertising on YouTube, carefully considering which channels and videos are eligible for advertising".

"We are planning to apply stricter criteria and conduct more manual curation, while also significantly ramping up our team of ad reviewers to ensure ads are only running where they should". "This will also help vetted creators see more stability around their revenue", she says.

The technology has reviewed and flagged content that would have taken 180,000 people working 40 hours a week to assess, according to Wojcicki.

According to Wojcicki, YouTube spent previous year "testing new systems to combat emerging and evolving threats" and invested in "powerful new machine learning technology", and is now ready to employ this expertise to tackle "problematic content".

"As challenges to our platform evolve and change, our enforcement methods must and will evolve to respond to them".
