US Special Counsel Robert Mueller has subpoenaed Donald Trump's Deutsche Bank records

The probe into Russia's influence over the last staged elections in the U.S. has continued to gather steam as United States special counsel Robert Mueller has reportedly asked Germany's Deutsche Bank to provide records of accounts held by President Donald Trump.

In June, the German bank rejected a demand by Democrats to provide details of the President's finances, citing privacy laws.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller has released a statement of the costs of investigating Russian meddling for the period from May 17 until the end of September, part of a commitment to release reports of his outlays every six months.

Mueller's investigators have, according to previous media reports, examined Russian purchases of Trump-owned apartments, the president's involvement with Russian associates in SoHo, and the president's 2008 sale of his Florida mansion to a Russian oligarch, Dmitry Rybolovlev.

"I don't make money from Russian Federation", he told The New York Times.

Deutsche Bank, which has loaned the Trump organization hundreds of millions of dollars for real estate ventures, said it would not comment on any of its clients. After a string of bankruptcies and broken promises, pretty much every other major bank stopped lending Trump money some years ago. More recently, though, he has highlighted news reports that Peter Strzok, the former top FBI official assigned to the investigation, was reassigned after it was discovered he and another team member had exchanged texts disparaging Trump and supporting Clinton. "I would say yes".

Mueller sought records from Deutsche Bank, a source familiar with the subpoena told ABC News. "Look, this is about Russian Federation". But the fact that Mueller is looking at Deutsche Bank means his probe is reaching the very heart of Trump's financial life.

This may turn out to be no big deal - perhaps Mueller will find that all Trump's transactions with Deutsche Bank were above-board and free of any amusing business, and also that nothing he discovers there will lead to evidence of any other misconduct on Trump's part.

In 2012, his Trump International Hotel Hotel and Tower in Chicago was loaned up to $640m, according to a property filing.

A day later, the DOJ announced that former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to lying to federal agents during the investigation about his contacts with three individuals said to have had connections to the Russian government.
