Creek Fire Forces Hundreds of Evacuations 210 Freeway Closure

By 6:20 a.m. local time, the fast-moving brush fire, fueled by 25 miles per hour winds, was burning about 50 acres in western Los Angeles, prompting residents of several posh neighborhoods to evacuate their homes, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Los Angeles Mission College's Main Campus at 13356 Eldridge Ave. and the East Campus at 12890 Harding St., both in Sylmar, were closed for the day.

On Tuesday evening, a fire official said he suspects hundreds more homes have been destroyed.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said that the Skirball Fire, named after the nearby Skirball Center, was expected to grow.

"It's been years since anything here has burned at all", Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Cody Weireter told The Times. More than 350 firefighters from 52 engine companies were deployed to the scene, supported by helicopters that were making water drops, said LAFD Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas.

The fire was burning in the same general area as the devastating Bel Air Fire of 1961.

Nicknamed the Skirball Fire, it was reported at 5 a.m. near Mulholland Drive, a five-minute drive from the Skirball Cultural Center.

Two evacuation centers were opened: Sylmar Recreation Center at 13109 Borden Ave.in Sylmar, and Sunland Senior Center at 8640 Fenwick St.in Sunland.

If the fire crosses the 405 freeway, it will hit one of the highest priced residential areas of Brentwood, she added.

Homes on Moraga Drive, Linda Flora Drive, Casiano Road down to Bellagio Road, east of the 405, south of Mulholland Drive, North of Sunset Boulevard and west of Roscomare Road are now under mandatory evacuation orders.

An unknown number of homes were destroyed by the blaze, according to LAFD.

The Los Angeles Police Department ordered mandatory evacuations and the California Department of Transportation closed Intereste 405 between Highway 101 and Interstate 10. The southbound lanes of the 405 have since reopened.
