Australian Parliament allows same-sex marriage

Australia could have same-sex marriage before the end of the day

After months of debate and decades of campaigning, same-sex marriage is now legal in Australia.

Many supporters of the Bill travelled to Canberra to witness the outcome of the parliamentary process. And I said to LGBTIQ Australians in particular, you have given us a gift.

Following a national postal survey that indicated overwhelming approval for marriage equality, lawmakers road this momentum to draft a multilateral, cross-party bill to legalize same-sex marriage.

Just last month, Australians overwhelmingly voted via a nationwide poll to make marriage equality a law in their country.

While they already considered themselves engaged, the rings they wore on their left hands, he said, were their answers to a question that they once could not ask.

"This is a day for every Australian".

The first gay marriage is supposed to be registered in February 2018.

Marriage equality campaigners have fought for years for Thursday's vote.

While marriage equality could become law this week, state marriage registries say they would not have the paperwork to proceed with weddings until January.

The Marriage Amendment bill, if passed, will change the Marriage Act to legalise same-sex marriage.

After the bill passed the Senate last week, House proceedings kicked off with fireworks Monday when Liberal MP Tim Wilson surprised his colleagues by proposing to his longtime partner Ryan Bolger.

Nearly 80 per cent of eligible voters took part in the poll, and almost 62pc of the 12.7 million people who participated chose "yes" on their ballots.

It was opposed by proponents of same-sex marriage, who wanted direct legislative action and argued a poll would expose gay people and their families to hate speech.
