Expanding concealed gun law divides NY leaders

Nancy Pelosi: GOP Using National Reciprocity to Arm 'Violent Criminals'

The legislation faces an uncertain future in the Senate. "The House bill would not force states to change their own laws, but it would treat a concealed-carry permit like a driver's license, letting individuals allowed by one state to carry a concealed weapon with them into another state".

Two things need to be noted here.

Both parties saw defections with 14 Republicans- including the head of the Congressional Second Amendment Caucus, U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky- casting "no" votes while six Democrats jumped ship to support the bill.

New Jersey has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the state and concealed carry permits are rarely or never granted to ordinary citizens.

Supporters of the bill have argued that the patchwork of existing laws, varying from state to state, can create confusion for lawful gun owners and turn them into criminals by simply crossing state lines.

According to NPR, the measure passed, 231-198, and is now headed for a stingy battle in the Senate. Some states already have concealed carry reciprocity and it has had deadly consequences.

"This section shall not be construed to supersede or limit the laws of any state that permit private persons or entities to prohibit or restrict the possession of concealed firearms on their property, or prohibit or restrict the possession of firearms on any state or local government property, installation, building, base, or park".

"The truth is that concealed carry laws save lives", Ryan said in a statement.

She said this even though it is a fact that concealed carry permit holders are among the most law-abiding of law-abiding Americans.

"The first concrete action this body has taken in response the numerous gun tragedies our nation has experienced is to make it easier for people to carry hidden, loaded guns in our communities", said Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-12), a New Jersey Democrat who has strongly opposed efforts to loosen gun restrictions. "The Second Amendment right to bear arms is one of the most fundamental rights provided to us in the Constitution and I will proudly continue to stand up for the gun rights of Kentuckians". "They're going to be a million people here in about three weeks, and that would be perfectly legal even if it was against NY state law". Instead, we have the highest rate of gun deaths.
