Google Amazon row leads to restricted YouTube access

Google Starts Blocking YouTube on Fire TV, Echo Show

Google's referring to the fact that Amazon doesn't sell the Chromecast and Google Home, doesn't make Prime Video available to Google Cast users, and stopped selling subsidiary Nest's products last month.

Amazon supports a subset of its Android apps on the Google Play Store for non-Amazon Android devices, including the recent addition of an android and tablet app for its Amazon Prime Video service.

The service was initially blocked earlier this year on the Echo Show (Amazon's Alexa-enabled screen) which shipped with a custom YouTube app developed without Google involvement.

Is Google right to withdraw the YouTube app as a result of Amazon's actions? After a series of disagreements over how Amazon is accessing YouTube content, Google has pulled the plug on YouTube access for Amazon's Echo Show and Fire TV devices.

In September, Google abruptly pulled YouTube off Amazon's Echo Show: Google did this, many speculated, because Amazon wasn't letting - or wasn't able - to implement features Google wanted on the Echo Show's YouTube app, like subscriptions, autoplay, and next video recommendations. Similarly, Amazon Prime Video doesn't support Google's Cast feature, making it hard to get video to a big screen for Android users.

Amazon's Fire TV devices will also be affected.

Amazon's relationship with Google may have soured, but the ecommerce giant seems to have found a new friend in Apple Inc. Now Amazon has stopped selling Google's Nest smart thermostat.

But YouTube is a heavy piece of leverage for California-based Google.

It's a classic example of two companies fighting very publicly at the expense of the customer.

Google says YouTube won't come back until Amazon is willing to work together and ensure consumers have access to both companies' products.

Amazon said Google was "setting a disappointing precedent by selectively blocking customer access to an open website", but said they hoped to resolve the dispute.

The continued feuding may hurt Amazon and Google heading into the holiday season as well, as consumers look for streaming-TV devices to buy that don't limit what they can watch.

Amazon and Google really don't like each other. Amazon later added YouTube to the device, its voice commands for the service violated the terms of use. "We hope to resolve this with Google as soon as possible".
