Robert Mueller Crossed Donald Trump's Red Line and Subpoenaed His Bank Records

Special counsel Robert Mueller has issued a subpoena to Germany's largest bank, in a possible sign the investigation into Russian election interference may be expanding toward the finances of President Donald Trump or other individuals under scrutiny by the special counsel.

"An earlier subheadline said a subpoena from special counsel Robert Mueller's office requested data and documents about President Trump's accounts". The subpoena is part of a probe by special counsel Robert Mueller and his team to determine whether the president's campaign was involved in Russian efforts to influence the U.S. election.

However, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders rejected reports of a subpoena for Mr Trump-related financial records as "completely false", as did Mr Trump's personal attorney Jay Sekulow.

A day later, the Bloomberg story and headline were updated only to claim that "Deutsche Bank Records Said to Be Subpoenaed by Mueller". "We have confirmed this with the bank and other sources", Dowd wrote in an email.

After the original loan, the same division of the bank continued to lend to Trump: "He took out two mortgages against Trump National Doral resort in Miami".

The New York Times has reported that bank regulators were reviewing hundreds of millions dollars worth of loans that Donald Trump's businesses had with Deutsche Bank, Germany's largest.

"We have confirmed that the news reports that the special counsel had subpoenaed financial records relating to the president are false", Sekulow said.

Instead of targeting Trump or his family's records, the subpoenas were aimed at records that pertain to people or organizations affiliated with the president, according to the corrected stories.

Deutsche Bank earlier this year rebuffed efforts by Democratic U.S. lawmakers to get more information on its dealings with Trump as well as any information it may have about whether the Republican, his family or advisers had financial backing from Russian Federation.

In Collusion, Harding details Trump's attempts in 2008 to default on some $330 million he owed Deutsche Bank for its help financing the construction of the Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago.

Deutsche Bank is not the only Trump-related business interest that is attracting the attention of investigators.

In a July 9 interview with the New York Times, Trump said Mueller should not extend his investigation into Trump's finances if they were not directly related to the Russian Federation accusations.

Deutsche Bank countersued and the two sides eventually settled. United States investigators are demanding that it provide information on dealings linked to the Trumps, sources familiar with the matter told Handelsblatt. The charges were brought as part of Mueller's investigation.
