Google to drop support for AR focused Project Tango on March 1st

Google is going to shut down its once-hyped augmented reality project, Tango

Today Google announced an update to its ARCore Developer Preview and with it, the end of Tango support.

"Google is continuing AR development with ARCore, a new platform designed for building augmented reality apps for a broad range of devices without the requirement for specialised hardware". Google's ARCore took a similar approach. The official support for the Project Tango will come to halt from March 1, 2018.

"We're turning down support for Tango on March 1, 2018".

Project Tango was launched in 2014 to enable mobile devices to detect their position relative to their world around them without using Global Positioning System. Another manufacturer that has supported Project Tango is Lenovo, with the Phab 2 Pro large-screen smartphone that was launched in 2016. Unlike many other ideas, like the oh-so environmentally-friendly Project Ara, at least Tango is getting succeeded by Google's own ARcore. All ARKit-ready apps require is an iPhone running iOS 11 and an A9 processor - there's no need for speciality hardware as even 2015's iPhone 6s and last year's iPhone SE can run apps built with ARkit.

The Tango platform was dedicated to bringing AR to smartphones. We thank the incredible community of developers who made such progress with Tango over the last three years.

Google ARCore was rolled out in August, and the first consumer application was seen recently when the company released AR stickers themed around movie series Star Wars and Netflix-produced TV show Stranger Things. "We look forward to continuing the journey with you on ARCore", a Google spokeswoman told ZDNet. But Google clearly wants to make those experiences available to more users, which means moving on from Tango.
