Schiphol airport evacuated as man held

Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam evacuated due to suspicious situation

The situation is under control and the airport is safe, the military police say.

It was unclear why the man threatened police.

"Man shot by the military police at Schiphol Airport after he threatened [people] with a knife", the force said on Twitter.

The man was arrested and then taken to an Amsterdam hospital as police began investigations at the scene and travelers who had been ushered outside were allowed back into the airport.

There are no reports of any other injuries. 'He was injured and has been taken into custody'.

Schiphol Plaza, which houses shops, bars and restaurants, was evacuated but not the parts of the airport behind the check-in area and security checks, airport spokeswoman Roos van der Ven said.

The incident is not being treated as an extremist attack, spokesman Stan Verberkt said.

"Man at Schiphol shot at by the military police, after he made threats with a knife".

He said "the circumstances are telling us that it has nothing to do with terrorism".

There are no further details about the suspect or his motives as yet.

People at the airport were terrified when they realized what was going on, an Amsterdam resident called Tobias told the Telegraaf.

Air traffic was not effected.

Although Tobias was not there at the shooting, he saw the suspect being taken away after.
